Four Warning Signs to Look for When Hiring a Locksmith

Many people contact a locksmith from time to time for a reasonable solution for a lockout, lost keys and other unfortunate situations. In most cases, individuals need locksmith services urgently. Some people may be inclined to set up service with the first company that they call based on the assumption that all will provide the same types and quality of services.

However, this can be a mistake that you may regret later. As you prepare to hire a professional to assist you with your current situation, look for these critical warning signs.

1. The Lack of a Local Office

If you are like many people, you will search for a lock and key professional online. When you visit a company’s website, take the easy and important step of reviewing their business address. Avoid working with companies that do not post their professional address, that have an address in a distant city or that only publish a post office box. Legitimate Toronto locksmith businesses have a local street address.

2. Failure to Answer the Phone Directly

Some companies understandably use an answering service, and there are usually a few reputable companies that are one-man operations. It is reasonable to expect a business’s phone to roll to voicemail periodically because of the typically small size of these companies. However, if you call again in 10 or 15 minutes and the same thing happens, this may be a sign that you want to avoid the company.

3. Lack of Professionalism

You can learn a lot about a company by their professionalism over the phone. Do they answer the phone professionally, or do they answer it as they would answer their personal cell phone? When speaking to you, is the representative courteous and respectful? Do you feel as though they took their time addressing your questions fully?

4. Inability to Provide a Written Quote

Many locksmiths will not provide you with an estimate over the phone, and this makes sense. After all, they need to inspect the features to determine the best way to address your current issue. You should always expect a written estimate after the professional has visited your location and determined the type of service that needs to be completed. The quote should not have any caveats or loopholes that permit other fees to be tacked on.

Locksmiths provide valuable services that are often essential in a time of need. As important as it is to receive these services promptly in many cases, be aware that not all locksmiths are equal. If you have noticed any of these signs when working with a company, it is best to toss that service provider aside and to begin searching for a more reputable company to do business with.
